What is a Swiss tournament?
You will play multiple rounds (in this case, 4 rounds minimum) playing against different people in every round. You will be matched up with people with similar scores as you are. For example, if you won round 1, you will be paired with another winner in round 1. In other words, you will be constantly be matched up with those with a similar skill level as you are.

You are not eliminated if you lose. You will keep playing vs other people until the tournament is over.

If the total number of participants is an odd number (eg, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15), then one participant will receive a "Bye" each round. Participants receiving a bye will not play for one round. This will not negatively affect your score, so no need to worry.

How are the battles done?
Once the tournament starts, I will call out the pairings for the rounds. Find your opponent and then send a battle request via the PSS in the game. If you received a battle request, make sure it is from the person you are supposed to fight.

You must pick the following settings for the battle request:
  • Number of Players: Two-Player Match
  • Battle Format: Double Battle
  • Battle Rules: Flat Rules
  • Handicap: Off
Once the battle request goes through, do NOT start the battle until the judge tells you to start.

What is VGC?
VGC stands for Video Game Championships, and it's the ruleset used in all official leagues and tournaments, including the World Championships. While this is NOT an official Pokemon tournament/league, we will simply use the same rules.

Basically, what you should need to know are as follows:
  • Double battle
  • Bring 6 Pokemon, choose 4 for battle
  • All Pokemon must be in the Kalos Pokedex. (Full list: http://goo.gl/l78IJ1 )
  • In addition to the above point, Mewtwo, Yveltal, Xerneas, and Zygarde are banned.
  • You cannot use two of the same Pokemon in your team.
  • You cannot have two Pokemon hold the same item.
  • All Pokemon at levels above 50 will be temporarily reduced to 50 for the battles. Those below 50 will remain at their current level.
  • All Pokemon must be born or caught in XY or ORAS. You can know if they are born or caught in either of those games by the presence of the blue pentagon icon in the Summary screen.
  • Each battle has a total time limit of 15 minutes. Once the 15 minutes are up, STOP PLAYING and wait for the judge to come around.
  • In the case of a timeout (above point), the team with the highest number of standing Pokemon wins. If both players have the same, then the team with the highest total percentage of remaining HP wins. If both teams are the same, then the team with the highest total remaining HP wins.
  • Intentionally wasting time each turn will get you a warning. Repeating this will cause you to lose that match. If you keep doing it after that, you will be disqualified.
  • As of November 21st, moves taught by ORAS Move Tutor moves are legal.

General Tournament rules:
  • Be there on time. If you do not, we will start without you, and you can't join after it starts, even if you signed up!
  • Since there are other people in the area playing other games (card games, board games, etc.), your 3DS's volume slider must be set to zero, or you wear headphones.
  • If you suspect someone is using cheats and/or hacked Pokemon, call the judge ASAP to have them checked.
  • There will be a short break at the midpoint of the tournament. However, if everyone agrees to not to have a break, we will skip the break.
  • If your game freezes or the 3DS runs out of battery, that will be counted as a loss for you. Be sure to have your 3DS fully charged before coming to the tournament, and, if your game is a digital copy, make sure your SD card is free from errors that may cause the game to crash or freeze.
  • You are allowed to bring a blank notepad and pencil to take notes for battle.
  • You are NOT allowed to bring any reference sheets such as Pokemon type lists, Pokemon stats, or type weakness/resist chart.
  • You are NOT allowed to have someone helping you during the tournament
  • By participating in this tournament, you have read and agreed to the rules set in this page.
